Hi there,

Seems I haven't posted anything in a little bit. School is going well - Chemistry is not for the faint of heart, but I seem to be managing quite well so far. Vice City is truly lovely this time of year - for one month, everything is green and warm, not sticky hot or biting cold. I read about cryptome - if anyone has the inside skinny, I'd love to hear it.

My XP box died today. Constant blue screens on startup, and a corrupted file in WINNT that rebooted the box soon after it popped up (which bring you back to the bluescreens). It was a long illness. I am tired of it. I'm considering Ubuntu if anyone has any thoughts on it. If you have a fav distro, post it instead with your rationale, if any. I'll get the data off of the HD and back it up to DVD with Knoppix, then move on. I got most stuff backed up except for the music, which is long overdue.

Oh yeah - I moved again to VA next to the Pentagram and have rejoined The Firm. If you're reading this, you probably know this already.

Mar. 23rd, 2005 @ 09:08 pm Goodbye Jim
Current Mood: sadsad
Today, I found out Jim Stanley died and I am very sad. I never heard a negative comment about Jim. He was always there with the proverbial joke and a smoke, or a much needed heal when we would play UO or PnP D&D together. Jim was the kind of guy you would wanna have as your next door neighbor - kind, funny and fun. I had the good fortune to see him a few weeks ago when I went back down to Vice City and am grateful for the chance. When I spoke to him that night, he was very excited for the chance to start his own business and be back with his family in Alabama. He was leaving a few days after me and seemed very satisfied with things. Jim had a hard time of it in the last year - none of it his fault. He dealt with it like a champ, kept moving forward, and kept looking for new opportunities in his life. He was a guy you were always happy to see and I will miss him very much.

OK - easy way to get this word out. A rash and hasty road trip has been laid on for Deekin (going solo) back down to SFL this weekend - Friday night to Sunday night. All is arranged. Plans are being hatched for a public display of shameful behavior (of some sort) for Saturday night. If you are reading this, I'd love to see you. Hopefully you have my email or cellphone number. If not, ask the usual suspects as I have been making surreptitious calls hither and yon round 5050 this week.

If you have a killer idea for Sat night, let me or one of the mutual cronies know. Can be anything from a boar slaughter in the swamps to naked jai alai on South Beach (meebe whilst slaughtering boars?)

Besides tempus_thales, of course. I'm wondering if it is worth the $50. It seems it, but I wanna hear some reports from the field.

OK, I had a boatload of stuff typed and this incredibly shitty LJ client I tried this evening cut off 95% of my post, and LJ browser can't edit it, so my last post looks like I am retarded or something. So I'll summate thusly:

1) I cut my friend page down because some of it was very long and I do'nt stop by often enough to read everything. No offense meant.

2) I finished buying parts for my new box for a good price. I had a million links for you guys but #3 ate most of them. I'll redo it the next time I need to kill 30 minutes of my life

3) http://www.livejournal.com/users/lj_win32/22933.html - This program is the worst piece of shit I have ever seen. Please hang yourself before you harm more people.

MSI nVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT Video Card - this nice part about this card, aside from the fact that it is a proven gaming card, is the fact that t accepts vid input. Now I can start to offlload some of my Tivo stuff and get it burned. If the quality sucks, well, thats why they made this.

NEC 16X Double Layer DVDRW Drivee - silvery goodness

Alps Silver 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive- its silver, and floppy!

all from Newegg - if you have never shopped from there, yer missing out.

PS - getting chilly up here - 42 and raining heavily. Mmmmmmmm

and continuing to RTFA, I now note this information, which I did verify through independent googling:

<<< Verizon Deploying Fiber Optics to Homes and Businesses in 6 More States in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

FALLS CHURCH, Va., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Fast as light, Verizon is moving to roll out advanced fiber-based broadband technology to customers in six more states.
At a news conference here today, the company plans to announce new fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployment to homes and businesses in Virginia as well as in parts of Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania -- bringing to nine the total number of states where work is under way. The company had previously announced FTTP deployment in California, Florida and Texas as part its plan to pass some 1 million homes and businesses with the new technology this year. Verizon plans to pass some 2 million additional homes and businesses with the new technology next year. >>>

So good ol' PA is back in the running, and if it is any part of the state it'll be the one I live in, since it is basically the only urban area. No, Pittsburgh doesn't count.

I'll stop the insane play by plays here and will just post when I get a frigging answer one way or the other.

In other questions - is qualitycoach stil around?

That'll teach me to get all excited about a /. article w/o doing a smidgen of research into the posting. Seems about the third comment down, someone mentions Verizon is only doing this in test markets - such as Texas and er, um, Florida. Run now to yer browser of choice while I sit here and be envious.

In the quest for faster playtime computing during the .0000000032 milliseconds I am not driving to Deliverance country for work, working, or being delayed at the end of the day at work, I started to buy up some snappy components for boxzen #2. Got the 3.0GHz P4 and 1GB of ram staring me in the face, with an Asus board on the horizon in the next couple of days. Newegg rocks woot! Though pricey, I am thinking of the GeForce 6800 GT (the ultra is way too much). HDs, case etc is TBD. This is all necessary since my comp is just plain slow now. Doom3 runs like crap, Desert Combat is an embarrassment online, and I am plain sick of not being able to play my games anymore. This however pales in comparison to that I just read on /. - it may not be a lot of help to my BS friends now down in Dixie, but it might be coming to your neck of the woods soon....

Verizon Taking FTTP Installation Orders

Posted by timothy on Tuesday October 26, @07:18PM
from the sneeze-at-cat5 dept.
ooglek writes "Verizon is now qualifying and accepting installations for FTTP (Fiber To the Premises)! $39.95 for 5MB/2MB, $49.95 for 15MB/2MB, and $199.95 for 30MB/5MB. No word yet on whether Verizon will block ports (25, 80, etc) for incoming or outgoing traffic; with 2MB upload, I hope to basically run a small data center in my basement. Both phone and Internet will come through the fiber, and there is an unofficial rumor of video services as well by the end of this year. Got Fiber? My install date is November 2nd in Falls Church, VA (near DC). Several people in Keller, Texas have posted pictures and reported 14,679 kbps download and 1,794 kbps download speeds." Update: 10/26 23:52 GMT by T: That second "download" ought probably read "upload."

The article may be read here with all appropriate links- sadly and predictibly, the page to test yer number is being /.'ed by tons of like minded geeks, so I don't know if I qualify yet. I went with cable when I moved back up to Liberty City - currently that gives me:

3063 / 237

but I crave more more more.

Update - the page stopped giving me .NET errors upon submission - it sez it is now checking. Who wants to bet that this bombs out as well? 15 MBps doesn't sound slike the worst deal in town though...

More updates - yep, it timed out again....
